Cheeto may have wanted his VP dead, but Pence learned something from him

Of course, that something is "how to be shameless while lying," but at least his time around Cheeto wasn't a complete waste.

Cheeto still wanted him dead, though.

OK.  Pence may have learned something else from Cheeto - loyalty to one's own interests is paramount, and he seems to be attempting to avoid an admission of engaging in treasonous activity.

This story is about former AZ governor Doug Ducey as well.

From Politico -

Pence says ‘no pressure involved’ in calls to governors following 2020 election

Former Vice President Mike Pence called former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey following the 2020 election, but “there was no pressure involved,” he said in an interview airing Sunday.

Pence’s comments followed a report in the Washington Post that former President Donald Trump pushed Pence to make a call to Ducey to urge him to find evidence that would help Trump overturn the state’s presidential results.

[snip]

According to the Post’s report, Trump also called Ducey, prodding the Republican governor to find enough fraudulent votes to help overturn his narrow loss to Joe Biden in the state.

Since Ducey’s refusal to overturn the state’s election results in 2020, he has been a political punching bag for Trump, who has called him a “RINO” — Republican in Name Only — and “one of the worst Governors in America.” But Ducey, who has since left office after reaching his term limit, has stood by his decision, saying he was “loyal to the Constitution and the law.

Ducey's loyalty is to money, and always has been.

Well, the first* Republican announces for the R primary in the 2024 race for US Senate

A "colorful" Pinal County sheriff not named Paul Babeu has announced his intent to run for the seat.

Mark Lamb, professional bigot and stone trumper (yes, I'm being redundant there) announced his candidacy today.  He's not the first R in that particular primary, hence the "*", but he's the first recognizable name to form a committee.

His treasurer is Lisa Lisker of Virginia.

Other Rs who may be looking at the race include (some of this speculation I've heard in news reports, some I'm pulling out of my...ear :) ):

Kari Lake, Karrin Taylor Robson, Blake Masters, Doug Ducey, Mark Brnovich, Sal DiCiccio, and for a dark horse candidate, I'll toss out one name, Kyrsten Sinema.  If she becomes a Republican.  My guess is that even they won't accept her.

There will be others, of course, and not all of those listed will actually run, but I'll be surprised if at least two don't do so.

Shipping containers as shelters for the homeless? Betcha I know where there are a few serving no good purpose.

First, from 12 News, dated 12/16 -

Shipping container homeless shelter plan approved by Phoenix City Council

Refurbished shipping containers will be turned into shelter units in the City of Phoenix after the Council approved a plan on Wednesday.

The $3 million contract with Steel & Spark LLC will create private units on a city-owned lot near 22nd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road that will house 80 individuals or family units in ‘X’ shape pods of four 40-foot-tall containers.

I know where Doug Ducey has left some.

From The Guardian (UK). dated 12/11 -

Arizona governor builds border wall of shipping crates in final days of office

A makeshift new barrier built with shipping containers is being illegally erected along part of the US-Mexico border by Arizona’s Republican governor – before he has to hand over the keys of his office to his Democratic successor in January.

Doug Ducey is driving a project that is placing double-stacked old shipping containers through several miles of national forest, attempting to fill gaps in Donald Trump’s intermittent border fencing.

His successor, Governor-elect Katie Hobbs, doesn't support Ducey's scheme.

From the Ahwatukee Foothills News, written by Howard Fischer of Capitol Media Services, dated 12/16 -

Hobbs vows to stop shipping container border wall

Incoming Gov. Katie Hobbs plans to halt any further work on building a wall of storage containers on the state’s southern border.

“It’s not our land to put things on,’’ she told Capitol Media Services.

Hobbs said this isn’t just a matter of the state acting illegally. She said the maneuver by lame-duck Gov. Doug Ducey in August to put a double-high wall of containers along stretches of the border after incoming President Joe Biden halted the wall being built by former President Trump makes no sense.

Neither do the Feds.  Not hardly.

From AP, via NPR, dated 12/15 (emphasis added by me) -

The U.S. is suing Arizona over shipping containers on the border with Mexico

The U.S. government sued Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and the state Wednesday over the placement of shipping containers as a barrier on the border with Mexico, saying it is trespassing on federal lands.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court comes three weeks before the Republican governor steps aside for Democratic Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs, who has said she opposes the construction.

Ducey told U.S. officials earlier this week that Arizona is ready to help remove the containers, which he says were placed as a temporary barrier. But he wants the U.S. government to say when it will fill any remaining gaps in the permanent border wall as it announced it would a year ago.

Maybe Ducey should set a good example by calling a special session of the legislature in order to fix the aggregate expenditure limit looming over public education, as he promised he would.

But won't.

Ducey goes back on his word about calling a special session of the legislature

[Begin sarcasm]

I'm shocked!  Shocked, I say!

[/End sarcasm]

From Howard Fischer of Capitol Media Services via The Payson Roundup, emphasis added by me -

Gov. Ducey won't call special session solely to assure school funding

Lame duck Gov. Doug Ducey said Monday he won't call a special legislative session to deal with problems with school funding before his term ends this month until he gets a promise that lawmakers will deal with some issues on his own agenda.

And that could scuttle any chance of giving schools an immediate assurance they won't have to cut more than a billion dollars from their spending plans by July 1.

[snip]

The governor acknowledged Monday that he had agreed to bring lawmakers back to the Capitol to waive the "aggregate expenditure limit'' if he could be shown that the votes were there. Such a move requires 20 of the 30 senators and 40 of the 60 representatives.

Lawmakers from both parties who support the waiver said last week they have the votes.

But Ducey, whose term is up at the end of the month, said that's not enough.

Ducey will run for Senate in 2024, if only as a fallback in the event that he isn't included on the GOP ticket as the vice presidential candidate.

And R voters should remember his lack of honor when casting their primary votes

Red State governors like sending busloads of migrants to blue states and cities. The receiving governors and mayors should return the favor.

But no, not with immigrants.

From The Oregonian (emphasis added by me) -

GOP governors try to bus migrants to blue cities, but many exit to live in red states

Since April, thousands of migrants have arrived by bus in New York City and Washington, D.C., sent north by Republican governors in Texas and Arizona as a political gambit to blame Democrats for the migrants’ presence in the country.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey have spent millions of dollars transporting migrants to the liberal cities to protest President Joe Biden’s intention to roll back some pandemic-era border restrictions and Democratic immigration policies more generally.

[snip]

Migrants have disembarked in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee in recent weeks, and some of the buses arriving in New York and Washington have been nearly empty, according to media reports, though local charities say they’re still helping dozens of arriving migrants almost daily. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, warned migrants back in April not to use the buses to get to his state, saying “Florida is not a sanctuary state.”

Blue state governors and blue city mayors should return those buses, but filled with guns that were used to commit murders in their jurisdictions but started off in red states.

From ReformAustin, dated 4/11/2022 -

Red States Have More Murders Than Blue States

To hear any Texas Republican tell it, “blue” cities like Houston are made into lawless abattoirs by Democratic leadership. However, a deep look at the actual murder data from the last several years shows that at the state level, Republican control is typically associated with more murder.

There’s no argument that Houston does currently have a very alarming murder rate. In a recent comprehensive report by Third Way, H-Town has a whopping 17.32 murders per 100,000 residents, one of the highest in the country. Governor Greg Abbott has repeatedly used that fact to push anti-progressive agenda items such as requiring cash bail, arguing that Democrats who are coddling criminals and defunding police forces.

[snip]

It makes a lot of sense when the causes of violence are looked at more closely. Consider Chicago, which is a favorite target of Second Amendment extremists because of its higher murder rate (28.49 per 100,000) and stringent gun control. However, most guns used in crimes in Chicago aren’t purchased in Chicago or even Illinois. Sixty percent of guns recovered in crimes in Chicago come from Indiana and Mississippi, two very red states with extremely lax gun laws that are within easy driving distance of the Windy City.

Don't misunderstand me - before any guns are shipped, the victims of those guns should be buried, any cases stemming from their use should adjudicated, and the guns themselves should be rendered permanently unable to be fired or repaired until they're in useable condition (What? You don't believe that certain red state governors like Ducey, Abbott, and DeSantis, would order the guns repaired (if possible) and sold?  Then you have a higher opinion of their personal characters than I've got)

Ducey wants to use Covid mitigation fund to financially reward private pro-Covid schools. Federal judge says "No."

And because money is involved, Dougie will appeal.  Of course.

From AP -

Judge tosses Arizona suit over limits on virus relief funds

A judge has dismissed Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s lawsuit challenging

the Biden administration’s demands that the state stop sending

millions in federal COVID-19 relief money to schools that don’t

have mask requirements or that close due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

The state filed the lawsuit earlier this year after the U.S. Treasury

Department demanded that Ducey either restructure the $163

million program to eliminate restrictions it says undermine

public health recommendations or face a repayment demand.

The Treasury Department also wanted changes to a $10 million program

Ducey created that gives private school tuition money to

parents if their children’s schools have mask mandates.

In a ruling earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Steven Logan

concluded it was reasonable for the Biden administration to say

that the money couldn’t be spent on efforts that would undermine

compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines. The judge

said a program that requires noncompliance with guidelines

may worsen the pandemic and create more negative effects,

which goes against the purpose of the relief fund.

[snip]

Ducey’s lawyers have said in court records that the governor is

appealing the ruling. Ducey spokesman C.J. Karamargin said on

Saturday that the governor’s office was reviewing the decision.

Federal court records are behind a paywall (PACER).

That's gotta sting: Ducey endorses Robson over Lake

Apparently, Doug Ducey, Arizona's term-limited outgoing governor, doesn't feel that learning to navigate the organizational politics of a TV studio is adequate training for a real world, elected, executive position.

Like her mentor Cheeto, a slot on TV is the extent of Lake's training for the job.

As bad as he is as governor, even Ducey did a term as state treasurer before running for governor.

From CNN -

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey endorses rival to Trump-backed candidate in GOP gubernatorial primary

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has endorsed Republican candidate Karrin Taylor Robson in the race to succeed him as the top executive in the critical battleground state, putting him at odds with former President Donald Trump, who is backing former television anchor Kari Lake in the GOP gubernatorial primary.

"I've looked at each of the candidates for Governor this year, and there's no question who is the proven conservative ready to lead on Day One: Karrin Taylor Robson," Ducey, who is term-limited, said in a statement released Thursday by the Taylor Robson campaign.

Now, the fact that Dougie likes someone is NOT a positive character reference for that someone.

Taylor Robson, like Lake, may not have any real world political experience, but as the race in the R primary has come down to Robson and Lake, and Ducey had to endorse *someone*...and he doesn't endorse Democrats.

His endorsement probably wouldn't be seen as a good thing in a D primary, anyway.

Lake does have at least one other thing in common with Cheeto - she golfs.

Arizona leading the way, but not in a good way

Pointed at this by the Election Law Blog.

From the Brennan Center for Justice -

Arizona Is the Epicenter of the Fight for Voting Rights Today

One of the worst voter suppression laws in the nation, fueled by conspiracy theories, has pushed Arizona to the forefront of the fight for voting rights.

In a brazen repudiation of federal law and recent Supreme Court precedent, Arizona recently enacted a law requiring documentary proof of citizenship to vote by mail or in presidential elections. In 2021, Arizona was one of the 17 states nationwide to enact new restrictive voting laws. Now it’s trying to break away from the rest of the voter suppression pack.

After a year and a half of conspiracy theories, a partisan postelection “audit,” antidemocratic legislation, election sabotage rhetoric from political candidates, and a Supreme Court ruling further weakening the Voting Rights Act, Arizona has become a key battleground in the fight for voting rights.

[snip]

Further, H.B. 2492 could be an attempt to push the Supreme Court to further erode voting rights. The Court recently held that Arizona’s previous attempt to require documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration violated the National Voter Registration Act. This new law seems designed as an invitation to the Court to reconsider that ruling.

Since the 2020 election, Arizona lawmakers have shown a consistent interest in using false claims about voter fraud as the raw material for justifying new restrictive voting laws.

HB2492 has been signed into law by Doug Ducey, Arizona's Governor; his letter to Katie Hobbs, Arizona's Secretary of State, is a shining example of self-serving doublespeak.

Well, at least Ducey can dance

Hey, it's the Republican two step, but at least it's a dance.

Of course, I could describe it as "shameless hypocrisy," but I'm nicer than that.  Trust me. :)

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey says his pro-life stance applies to abortions, not the death penalty

Gov. Doug Ducey said Wednesday his self-proclaimed "pro-life'' position covers only abortions and not executions — even those carried out in the name of the state.

Ducey said he believes in the death penalty in "certain rare situations.''

Ducey *is* consistent about one thing - he rarely grants clemency or pardons to those convicted of crimes, even wrongly.

Dougie declares his candidacy for the R nomination for *something*; I'm not yet sure for what, but he's running for it.

From AP -

Arizona governor signs bills limiting abortion, trans rights

Arizona’s Republican governor signed a series of bills Wednesday targeting

abortion and transgender rights, joining a growing list of GOP-led states

pursuing a conservative social agenda.

The measures signed by Gov. Doug Ducey will outlaw abortion after

15 weeks if the U.S. Supreme Court allows it, prohibit gender confirmation

surgery for minors and ban transgender girls from playing on girls and

women’s sports teams.

From NPR -

Arizona Republicans enact a controversial new proof-of-citizenship voting law

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Wednesday signed legislation to expand U.S. citizenship voting requirements in the state, a measure that critics warn will jeopardize the voter registrations of thousands of Arizona residents.

In signing House Bill 2492, Ducey disputed testimony from local officials and voting rights advocates who say an unknown number of voters — predominantly older, longtime Arizona residents — will be purged from the state's voter rolls because the last time they registered to vote, there was no requirement to provide proof of citizenship. Critics say those voters would then need to register again.

If nothing else, Ducey has announced that he's got at least one thing in common with each member of the GQP base - he's as much a hater as any of them.

Ducey says he's not running for Senate

From The Hill -

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey tells donors he won't run for Senate

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) has put what Republicans see as a final kibosh on any chances he would challenge Sen. Mark Kelly (D) later this year, ending a long-running courtship by top Washington Republicans who saw him as their best hope of winning back the seat.

In a letter to donors, Ducey said this year, the last of his eight years in the governor’s office, would be the end of his public service career.

He may not be running in 2022, but in 2024?

I expect that he will be looking *hard* at Kyrsten Sinema's seat in the Senate, no matter what she does. (She's more vulnerable than Kelly, IMHO)

And I also expect that he will also be looking at a run for the White House. (His decision there may depend on if Cheeto continues to dominate GQP politics and if he runs in 2024)

And saying that this year will be the "end of his public service career" implies that he ever really worked for the public.  He never has done so.

Cheeto wins CPAC straw poll/name recognition contest

From CNN -

Trump wins CPAC straw poll

Former President Donald Trump easily won an informal straw poll of conservatives Sunday, when asked who they would support in a GOP primary for president in 2024.

Among attendees as the Conservative Political Action Conference, 59% said they would vote for Trump if the 2024 Republican primary were held today.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second with 28% of the vote in the poll. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came in a distant third with 2% of the vote.

This would be significant...until one remembers that Ted "Cancun" Cruz won the same straw poll in 2016.

From Politico, dated 3/5/2016 -

Cruz wins CPAC straw poll

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday.

Cruz was named the winner with 40 percent of the attendees' support, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio came in second place with 30 percent. Donald Trump, who was scheduled to speak at CPAC on Saturday morning before pulling out, came in third place with 15 percent, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich had 8 percent.

And who do the people want for veep? South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has 12 percent, Haley has endorsed Rubio, and traveled with him on the trail. Kasich may not have placed high for the Oval Office but he’s tied for first for vice president. Carly Fiorina – who dropped out of the race earlier this month – is a close second with 11 percent of the vote. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Rubio are tied for third place with 9 percent a piece.

Of course, to be fair, for a poll two years out from the election, we should look at the results from 2014.

Also from Politico, this one dated 3/8/2014 -

Paul wins big in CPAC straw poll

Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off.

The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent.

Doug Ducey of Arizona and Greg Abbott of Texas should be heartened by the 2022 result.  Both have presidential ambitions, but weren't even mentioned in the 2022 poll.

However, the eventual winner of the 2016 Republican primary wasn't even an afterthought in the 2014 poll

US Sen. Kyrsten Sinema may be the most accomplished rationalizer in the state of Arizona

Watching her interview on Phoenix Channel 3's Politics Unplugged (video not posted as of this writing), that's the conclusion that I've reached.

And given that we live in AZ, home of unabashed rationalizers like Doug Ducey, referring to her as the "most accomplished" one is saying something.

Ducey goes full-throated in his embrace of his inner partisan hack

Not that his "inner partisan hack" was buried too deeply.

From Jeremy Duda at the AZ Mirror -

Ducey: A GOP senator with white nationalist ties is ‘still better than’ a Democrat

Gov. Doug Ducey said he has no regrets about spending $500,000 to elect a Republican state senator with open ties to the white nationalist movement because it’s still better than having a Democrat in her seat.

“I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. And she’s still better than her opponent, Felicia French,” he said Thursday.

Ducey’s political action committee, Arizonans for Strong Leadership, spent millions in 2020 to help the GOP maintain control of the legislature, including nearly $500,000 to help Republican Wendy Rogers win the race for the District 6 Senate seat in northern Arizona. Rogers won nearly 55% of the vote against Democrat Felicia French, a victory that kept the Senate in GOP hands by a single vote.

Rogers in action, also from the AZ Mirror.

From one of the reports filed by Ducey's PAC -

Ducey supports a bigoted white nationalist like Rogers over her 2020 opponent, Felicia French, a nurse and veteran.

Ducey being indecisive gets Brnovich burned

From Politico, dated 2/17/2022 (emphasis added by me) -

Ducey looms as last big question on 2022 Senate map

Arizona Statehood Day came and went on Monday. Those hoping GOP Gov. Doug Ducey might use the opportunity to announce he’s running for the Senate — as then-Rep. Jeff Flake did in 2011 — were disappointed when Ducey instead appeared at an event in Los Angeles.

The weekend before, at the Phoenix Open — a massive annual golf tournament where Ducey has announced major initiatives in previous years — the governor had also dashed the hopes of supporters. Ducey gave a brief, generic talk — disheartening some in the audience of big donors and tech executives who had heard word of a possible big reveal.

[snip]

The GOP’s chances of flipping the seat held by Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly — a key contest in the party’s fight for the Senate majority — are viewed by many in both parties as even better with Ducey, who has been elected statewide three times, than the current cast of MAGA Republicans in the race.

Being lumped with the crowd?

That's gotta sting...Mark Brnovich.

He's actually won a (relatively) high profile statewide race as Attorney General (so has Justin Olson, but that was for a seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission, and I'm betting that most R primary voters can't name even one member).  Not a particularly good AG, IMO, but he's still in office.

The Rs who have filed statements of interest in running for the seat -

Brnovich, Lamon, Olson, Masters, Paveza and McGuire have formed committees with the FEC.

Also forming a committee but not on the list of statements of intent:

Frank Bertone.

Hey, Arizona may not be perfect, but at least it isn't Texas

Of course - we're a LONG way from perfect.

We elect people like Doug Ducey, Wendy Rogers, Kelly Townsend, Paul Gosar, and many others, but Texas elects people like Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, Sid Miller, Louie Gohmert (and others).

And then there's this.

From Business Insider -

A Texas parent demanded a Michelle Obama biography be pulled from schools because they said it would make white girls feel 'ashamed'

A parent in Texas called for a children's biography about former first lady Michelle Obama to be pulled from school libraries because they viewed it as unfair to former President Donald Trump.

The Katy, Texas, parent took issue with a book titled "Michelle Obama: Political Icon" by Heather E. Schwartz, saying it "unfairly" depicted Trump "as a bully," according to NBC News, which on Wednesday published a list of 50 books that parents in Texas have asked schools to remove.

The request came as books depicting race, sexuality, and gender have faced heightened scrutiny from conservatives in the US, with many demanding certain titles be pulled from school libraries.

Nope, AZ isn't perfect, and maybe we shouldn't be talking smack about anyone, but TX could give us lessons in nuttiness, and that's saying something.

Sinema has something to worry about, Kelly's ahead: Arizona poll day

Pointed to the Sinema stuff by Taegan Goddard's Political Wire.

From a Data for Progress release -

Poll: Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema Set to Be Unseated by Possible Challenger Ruben Gallego in 2024 Primary Landslide

In October 2021, Data for Progress published poll findings that captured the extent of Arizona Democratic primary voters’ dissatisfaction with Senator Kyrsten Sinema: She had the highest unfavorability rating of any elected Democrat tested in the state, and she was poised to lose her 2024 primary by a wide margin.

Since then, speculation has mounted that progressive Representative Ruben Gallego, a Harvard-educated Iraq War veteran, is seriously considering a bid. Meanwhile, Sinema was censured by the Arizona Democratic Party this week for her defense of the filibuster, which came at the expense of passing popular voting rights legislation.

Data for Progress’ initial polling found Gallego to be in the best position to beat Sinema in 2024. New Data for Progress polling finds that, since October, Sinema’s favorability has dipped even further — and that Gallego’s potential to secure a primary victory has increased.

From the full poll -

[snip]

For Senator Kyrsten Sinema, her next hurdle is going to be her 2024 primary election, where she is going to have to convince Democratic primary voters in Arizona that she deserves to keep her job. Activists who are disappointed with her obstructionism and reluctance to support President Biden’s popular agenda are already organizing to draft other high profile Arizona politicians, like Rep. Ruben Gallego, to run against her in 2024. According to our new poll of likely Arizona Democratic primary voters conducted in October, using the same methodology we used in the recent New York City mayoral primary, we find that Sen. Sinema faces a steep uphill battle to defend her record and convince voters she should stay — as negative sentiment towards her continues to grow.

Mark Kelly Narrowly Leads in Arizona 2022 General Election Matchup

In recent years, Arizona — a traditional battleground state — has trended blue. Voters elected Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly to the Senate in upset victories in 2018 and 2020, respectively, and in 2020 the state narrowly voted for Joe Biden. But amid surges in Republican voter enthusiasm and turnout, Arizona is once again poised to become a battleground. Kelly, who won his seat in a special election, is running for his first full term, and a crowded slate of Republicans are hoping to replace him. Incumbent Republican Governor Doug Ducey is term-limited and is thus not eligible to run for re-election in 2022. While he has stated he will not be joining his party’s Senate primary as recently as January 20, 2022, speculation about a possible run has mounted anyway.

New Data for Progress polling gauges the state of the 2022 midterm elections in Arizona, analyzing favorability and approval across different candidates and elected officials as well as the issues Arizona voters support.

Yes, I do wish that Kelly was doing better (and I think he should be), but I'm torn - would he be better off facing Brnovich or Ducey?

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that Sinema better have a corporate lobbying gig already lined up.

If Dougie likes someone, it may not be a positive character reference for that someone

From Ben Giles, published by KJZZ -

Ducey praises Sinema's steadfast support of the filibuster

Gov. Doug Ducey had high praise for Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema one day after she sided with Senate Republicans to reject a proposed change to the filibuster.

“I want to give Senator Sinema credit for standing up and protecting a Senate rule that she believes in,” Ducey told reporters on Thursday.
