Well, the first* Republican announces for the R primary in the 2024 race for US Senate

A "colorful" Pinal County sheriff not named Paul Babeu has announced his intent to run for the seat.

Mark Lamb, professional bigot and stone trumper (yes, I'm being redundant there) announced his candidacy today.  He's not the first R in that particular primary, hence the "*", but he's the first recognizable name to form a committee.

His treasurer is Lisa Lisker of Virginia.

Other Rs who may be looking at the race include (some of this speculation I've heard in news reports, some I'm pulling out of my...ear :) ):

Kari Lake, Karrin Taylor Robson, Blake Masters, Doug Ducey, Mark Brnovich, Sal DiCiccio, and for a dark horse candidate, I'll toss out one name, Kyrsten Sinema.  If she becomes a Republican.  My guess is that even they won't accept her.

There will be others, of course, and not all of those listed will actually run, but I'll be surprised if at least two don't do so.

Does Mark Brnovich consider "jailhouse lawyer" to be a step up or step down from AZ Attorney General?

I should be clear - no matter how this turns out for him, I don't expect him to go to prison.

Though with the way he misused his position, he should.

Still, if he ends up getting disbarred/losing his license to practice law, he'll join Andrew Thomas in ignominy and irrelevance.

Generally speaking, the state bar association doesn't sanction attorneys, except for two real reasons.

If they do what Thomas did, accuse judges of wrongdoing without providing evidence, and/or bringing discredit to the entire profession.

Which may be tough to do, but using a position of public trust to aid and abet treason will do that.

Did Brnovich do that?  I think so, but it's your (the reader's) call.  From MSNBC (emphasis added by me) -

Mark Brnovich sacrificed his integrity for Trump — and got nothing in return

In the days after the 2020 election, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich did something most Republican leaders across the nation didn’t have the courage to do: He publicly refuted Donald Trump’s election lies.

On Nov. 12, 2020, the former federal prosecutor appeared on Fox Business and stated that his office had investigated complaints in connection with Arizona’s election, which had already been called for Joe Biden. “There is no evidence,” Brnovich declared. “There are no facts that would lead anyone to believe that the election results will change.” At the time, The Washington Post noted Brnovich was “the first high-ranking Republican in Arizona to reject the president’s fraud claims in the state.”

Sadly, Brnovich’s bravery didn’t last. Documents first shared with the Post by Arizona’s new Attorney General, Kris Mayes, show Brnovich trafficked in election misinformation to help himself politically and hid findings that disproved claims of fraud. It was a glaring example of the corrupting influence that comes with wooing Donald Trump and the supporters who believe his lies.

Did Mark Brnovich just use his position as state attorney general to aid and abet treason?

Or just to undermine election integrity?

From AP via Yahoo! -

Arizona AG gives county OK for full ballot hand counts

Arizona's Republican attorney general has issued an opinion saying county officials can hand-count all ballots in at least five races from the Nov. 8 election, a move that gives a green light to GOP officials in at least two counties who have been clamoring for hand counts.

The efforts to hand-count ballots are driven by unfounded concerns among some Republicans that problems with vote-counting machines or voter fraud led to former President Donald Trump's 2020 defeat.

[snip]

The elected Republican county attorneys in both jurisdictions have warned their respective boards there is no legal authority to expand a hand-count of ballots.

"It would be illegal at this point to do a full hand count,” Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer told his board on Wednesday.

Cochise County Attorney Brian McIntyre has told the board he also believes a full hand count is illegal and said the board and county Recorder David Stevens would need to find outside attorneys if they went ahead. He repeated that Friday, after Supervisor Judd said Brnovich had given the go-ahead.

Mesa voters intimidated by unknown assailants; Kari Lake rationalizes...the intimidation

From CNN -

The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office has referred to the US Department of Justice and Arizona Attorney General’s Office a report of voter intimidation, Murphy Hebert, spokeswoman for the secretary of state’s office, confirmed to CNN on Wednesday.

The unidentified voter reported that they were approached and followed by a group of individuals when the voter was trying to drop off their ballot at an early voting drop box on Monday, according to Hebert.

[snip]

Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake, who has embraced the politics of former President Donald Trump’s election lies and has not committed to accepting the results of her own race if she loses, said on Wednesday that she hadn’t “heard anything about” the report, but immediately seized on it to promote a central plank of her campaign.

“I haven’t heard anything about it. It just shows you how concerned people are, though. People are so concerned about the integrity of our election and this is another reason, Kate, this is another reason we have to restore integrity,” she told CNN’s Kate Sullivan at a campaign event in Scottsdale.

The report was forwarded to the office of the Arizona Attorney General; I will be surprised if Mark Brnovich does anything

Guessing that Mark Brnovich is doing a happy dance right about now

Pointed at this by Taegan Goddard's Political Wire.

From KOLD (Tucson), written by Bud Foster -

Teen girl denied medication refill under AZ’s new abortion law

A 14-year-old Tucson girl was denied a refill of a life-saving prescription drug she had been taking for years just two days after Arizona’s new abortion law had taken effect.

14 year old Emma Thompson has debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis which has kept her in and out of the hospital for most of her life. She relies on methotrexate to help tame the effects of the disease.

Walgreens, where the med was denied, responded with a rather weaselly statement.  From the same KOLD article -

Walgreens, where the prescription was denied sent us this statement:

Bud, our focus is meeting the needs of our patients and making sure they have access to the medications they need, in compliance with applicable pharmacy laws and regulations. Trigger laws in various states require additional steps for dispensing certain prescriptions and apply to all pharmacies, including Walgreens. In these states, our pharmacists work closely with prescribers as needed, to fill lawful, clinically appropriate prescriptions. We provide ongoing training and information to help our pharmacists understand the latest requirements in their area, and with these supports, the expectation is they are empowered to fill lawful, clinically appropriate prescriptions.

Brnovich likes to tout things when he's involved in having someone killed, but he hasn't put out a press release on this one.

Saturday, September 24, 2022

Rest assured R voters, you may have rejected Mark Brnovich in your primary, but he's still one of you

He may have come in third in a primary battle, but he still isn't interested in being an honorable and decent public servant.

From the website of the Arizona Secretary of State -

Brnovich seems to have developed a pattern, a pattern of probation vs. prison for his office' cases.

[begin sarcasm]

I can't quite put my finger on it.

[/end sarcasm]

Maybe a reader can.

Most of the following information was gathered from the press releases from the website of the Arizona Attorney General. ("place" is the county of the case; "term" is in years)

While I think that the pattern holds true in other areas, I've stuck with the recently announced "political" cases, as this is a political blog...and he has issued more than 1210 press releases since he's been in office.

Crow got a deal.

McKee got a deal.

Conner got a deal.

All received probation, but no prison, as part of their deals.

Contrast this with the treatment by certain other defendants in "political" cases.

Garcia did not get a deal.

Aguirre got prison, too. (I'm having trouble finding a court record to take a snippy of, so I linked to Brnovich's press release)

The cases have one other thing in common - all were prosecuted by Todd Lawson from the AG's office.

Has Mark Brnovich *ever* defended the will of the voters?

FYI - Brnovich is Arizona's Attorney General and may become proof that, in R primaries anyway, access to scads of money matters more than name recognition.

From RealClearPolitics -

From AZ Mirror, written by Kira Lerner -

U.S. sues Arizona over proof of citizenship voting law

The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division announced Tuesday that it has sued Arizona over a law signed by the state’s Republican governor in March that requires people registering to vote prove their citizenship to participate in a presidential election or to vote by mail in any federal election.

Republican proponents of the law, House Bill 2492, claim that requiring voters to provide a documentary proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate or passport, helps prevent voter fraud. But voting rights advocates say that non-citizen voting is extremely rare, and the law will disenfranchise voters who will have to jump through additional hurdles to be eligible to vote.

Even though he wants their support, Brnovich is unashamed of his hatred for voters.

From Arizona Public Media, written by Andrew Oxford -

[snip]

Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, said he would defend the law in court.

"It’s another round of Brnovich v. Biden as his DOJ continues its attempts to undermine our election integrity laws," Brnovich said on Twitter.

Of course, his hatred is a long-standing one.

From a press release from his office (actually, it's the entire press release), dated October 1, 2021 -

PHOENIX -- Attorney General Mark Brnovich released the following statement today on Arizona School Boards Association Inc. (ASBA) v. Arizona:

“I am pleased the Arizona Supreme Court accepted jurisdiction in the case because Arizonans deserve clarity as soon as possible,” said Attorney General Mark Brnovich. “The legislature has spoken – there is no place for Critical Race Theory or vaccine mandates in our schools.”

He does frequently defend acts from the state legislature, but I can't find an instance of him defending the public *from* the state legislature.  Maybe, if his whole "running for U.S. Senate" doesn't work out, he's bucking for a job at the office of the Legislative Council.

Judge rebuffs Phoenix PD in its quest to quash a lawsuit; dinner talk at the Brnovich table could get awkward

From ABC15, written by Dave Biscobing -

Judge denies Phoenix PD’s motion to dismiss protest lawsuit

A federal judge has denied a motion from the City of Phoenix to dismiss a lawsuit filed on behalf of more than 100 protesters who were swept up and arrested with a copy-and-paste probable cause statement.

Judge Susan Brnovich’s order means many of the claims against the Phoenix Police Department, Chief Jeri Williams, and individual officers will continue.

Yes, Susan Brnovich is related to Mark Brnovich, Arizona's Attorney General.  In fact, she's married to him.

No matter what Judge Brnovich has to say on the topic, AG Brnovich has already given a free pass to the Phoenix PD.

From KPNX (12 News in Phoenix), dated 8/17/2021, written by Hunter Bassler -

Arizona attorney general won't investigate Phoenix Police for charging BLM protesters as gang members

The Office of Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich said it will not investigate possible criminal conduct of the five Phoenix police officers who filed gang charges against Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020, a letter from the office says.

Blake Masters "parroting" Cheeto? More like "pandering" to him.

Pointed at this by Taegan Goddard's Political Wire.

From CNN (emphasis added by me)-

Audio shows Trump-endorsed Arizona Senate candidate questioned whether January 6 attack was set up by FBI

Blake Masters, the Republican Senate candidate from Arizona, met with conservative activists at a Phoenix IHOP this spring and was asked whether he would support investigating US intelligence operations to uncover the federal government's "nefarious activities."

Masters replied, "Absolutely," and then floated the conspiracy theory that the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol actually may have been a false-flag operation set up by the FBI, according to a recording of the March 30 meeting obtained by CNN.

[snip]

Masters is part of a wave of Republicans who have won the coveted endorsement of former President Donald Trump after parroting his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen and downplaying the actions of the pro-Trump mob that attacked the Capitol last year.

Of course, Cheeto may not be the only one that Masters is pandering to.

From Maddowblog on MSNBC -

Trump-backed Senate hopeful pushes racist line on gun violence

At face value, Blake Masters has an odd background for a U.S. Senate candidate. The Arizona Republican has worked as an executive at tech billionaire Peter Thiel’s company; he’s helped lead Thiel’s foundation; he’s helped promote Thiel’s ideas, and he’s been the beneficiary of Thiel’s electoral generosity.

The 35-year-old candidate, with effectively no background in government or policymaking, nevertheless launched a far-right campaign — and picked up an endorsement from Donald Trump, who not only tends to agree with Thiel, but who was also eager to undermine Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich for not doing more to advance the Big Lie.

Masters is proving to be quite a candidate. The Daily Beast reported on a newly unearthed quote in which the GOP Senate hopeful reflected on gun violence.

Tech investor and Arizona Republican Senate hopeful Blake Masters acknowledges that the United States has a gun violence problem. But he also has a theory about why there’s a problem—it’s “Black people, frankly.” Masters boiled the issue down in an April 11 interview on the Jeff Oravits Show podcast, telling the host that “we do have a gun violence problem in this country, and it’s gang violence.”

Just a guess: No matter how much he panders to Cheeto (and Cheeto likes panderers), Masters will always be Thiel's pet.

Dear Peter Thiel: If you're going to try to buy a seat in the US Senate from AZ, you might want raise (and spend) more than 1.25% of your PAC's money here

Also, if you're going to put "Arizona" in your PAC's name, it may be a good idea to base it here.

From the Saving Arizona PAC's statement of organization filed with the FEC -

Thiel used $10,000,000 of his billions and funded the PAC.

From the PAC's mid-year 2021 filing -

Yet, while the PAC may have "Arizona" in its name, incredibly little of its money has been raised or spent here.

According to its FEC summary page, the PAC has raised a total of $10,558,039.78, yet of that total, $130K was raised here (and of that, $100K came from the same sources -

What?  You say that the Blocks are different from Basis?  The records of the Arizona Corporation Commission might not agree -

Anyway, I digress.

To make a long story short, 1.23% of the PAC's money has been raised here.

Which is actually higher than the percentage of the PAC's money spent here, which is 1.14% out of $6,146,710.68.

Anyway, while Thiel has spent $10M + on the race (the "+" comes from the fact that he given almost $6K directly to Masters' campaign committee), but I have to ask one thing -

How much more did Thiel have to spend to "win" Cheeto's endorsement of Masters?

It's pretty obvious that I am *not* a fan of Mark Brnovich - I think that he's a bigoted and opportunistic hack.

Having said that, at least he's an Arizona bigoted and opportunistic hack and not a carpetbagger looking to buy a nomination.

Thiel/Masters is.

Rich people trying to buy a political office is not a new idea, but in the age of Cheeto, they're not even trying to hide it any longer.

From Politico -

Big-spending billionaires are upending politics. The Los Angeles mayor's race is the latest test.

Even by the cash-flush standards of modern politics, Rick Caruso’s run for mayor of Los Angeles has been a shock-and-awe spending campaign.

The billionaire Republican-turned-Democrat has already dropped $34 million on the race, single-handedly making the June 7 primary one of the most expensive elections in the country. He’s spent $25 million on TV advertising alone this year, more than any other candidate for any office in America, save one prospect running for governor in Illinois, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. And in those TV ads, Caruso hammers away at homelessness, crime and corruption at City Hall, a trio of top issues for Los Angeles voters, while casting himself as an outsider — “not just a talker, a doer,” one TV ad narrator says.

Let me guess - Mark Brnovich is doing his version of a happy dance right about now

From CNN -

Supreme Court makes it more difficult for prisoners to argue they had ineffective counsel

The Supreme Court said Monday that state prisoners may not present new evidence in federal court in support of a claim that their post-conviction counsel in state court was ineffective in violation of the Constitution.

The ruling is a major defeat for two inmates on death row who said they had compelling claims that their state lawyers failed to pursue.
In addition, it will make it harder for inmates across the country to prevail on claims that they received ineffective counsel at the state court level in post-conviction proceedings.
The 6-3 opinion was penned by Justice Clarence Thomas.

    [snip]

Barry Jones, one of the inmates, argued there was compelling evidence of his innocence for a charge of murder and won relief from the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals. He is now seeking either to be released or retried. Another inmate, David Ramirez, did not argue his innocence, but he said there was compelling evidence that his state counsel did not explore his claims of intellectual disability.

    "...penned by Justice Clarence Thomas..."

    Of course it was.

    The actual decision is here.

    But I digress.

As expected, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich crowed about the decision in a press release.

    [snip]

To sum up the complicated case, both Ramirez and Jones have been sentenced to death for their respective criminal convictions

    [snip]

With today’s ruling, SCOTUS has protected our justice system by enforcing proper and timely convictions. General Brnovich is proud to have worked on such an important case and applauds the Supreme Court’s decision.

Sentenced to death for "convictions" but not "crimes"?

Interesting priorities that Brnovich is showing.

It wouldn't be surprising if Brnovich tries to hurry one or both executions so that it/they take place before the primary in August so that he can stand on a dead body or two while giving a campaign speech.

    Markie right about now:

    From YouTube -

As an aside, am I the only one who's noticed that as primary season heats up so has Brnovich's penchant for issuing press releases?

Commit voter fraud? If you want your wrists slapped over it, be a Republican

From AP, via Arizona's Family (emphasis added by me) -

Scottsdale woman avoids jail for voting dead mom’s ballot

A Scottsdale woman charged with illegal voting for casting her dead mother’s mail ballot in the November 2020 election has avoided jail time but will serve two years probation. Tracey Kay McKee was sentenced on Friday. In February, she had pleaded guilty to a reduced felony charge of attempted illegal voting. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office dropped an additional perjury charge. Prosecutors wanted at least 30 days in county jail because she lied to investigators and railed about the need to prosecute voter fraud.

In January, McKee appeared in court and admitted signing her mother’s name to an early ballot envelope and mailing it to Maricopa County during the 2020 election. McKee’s mother had died a month before the November 2020 general election.

The 64-year-old registered Republican sobbed as she apologized for committing the crime. She’s one of 10 Arizonans charged so far with illegally voting in the 2020 general election that then-President Donald Trump lost.

In the Maricopa County Superior Court, the case number is CR2021001430; the case summary is here.

What?!? Mark Brnovich sacrificing the interests of Arizonans on the altar of his political interests?

    I'm shocked!  Shocked, I say!

For you newbys, that's sarcasm.  I'm not really shocked. :)

Arizona Attorney General using consumer fraud funds for politically charged legal fights

Consumer fraud complaints are rising dramatically across Arizona and around the country. In Arizona, defending consumers from scams and rip-offs falls to the office of Arizona’s Attorney General Mark Brnovich. Arizona’s Family investigators poured through years of budget records for the Attorney General’s office. The investigation found that Brnovich’s office has increasingly diverted funds earmarked for consumer protection to pay for legal battles that have nothing to do with consumer fraud.

“The Arizona Attorney General is the top cop,” said attorney Robert Rutila who’s submitted cases to the Attorney General’s Office on behalf of his clients on several occasions but says the AG’s office declined to take action. “It really doesn’t give a reason for declining the action,” said Rutila, reading the most recent letter from Brnovich’s office.

    [snip]

However, in budget requests submitted by the Attorney General since 2018, the office has increasingly diverted money in the Consumer Protection and Fraud Revolving Fund to pay for other operations. Analysis of the operations shows they have little or no connection to protecting Arizona consumers.

    [snip]

Brnovich, also running in the Arizona Republican primary for US Senate, has extensively touted the Federalism Unit’s work while on the campaign trail, including in several interviews on FOX News.

The unit’s current docket includes several lawsuits against President Joe Biden, including the decision to stop border wall construction. Earlier this week, a federal judge granted Brnovich a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) request after President Biden announced his decision to end Title 42 immigration restrictions. Brnovich also used the unit to file briefs in New York City and New Jersey gun rights cases.

Brnovich’s office said the Attorney General was busy when we repeatedly requested an interview. Instead, they offered to allow Sciarrotta to address questions about the budget.

Brnovich works against, not protects, the interests of Arizonans and now wants a promotion based on that?

Well, it looks like that he is adding "shameless" to go with his "hypocrite" status.

    Sunday, April 24, 2022

Well, Brnovich has the "hypocrite" part of being an R down pat...

...of course, being a good hypocrite may make him a lousy AZAG.

From Ben Giles of the Associated Press, published at KJZZ (emphasis added by me) -

Brnovich sues Hobbs in dispute over election procedures

Republican Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is joining with Republican Party officials to sue Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in an escalation of a dispute over the election procedures manual she is required to complete.

The two have been at odds for months over the manual that tells county officials how to run elections, and have tangled in other fights as well. Brnovich threatened to investigate Hobbs for temporarily taking down an online signature collection system used by candidates in order to update it with new congressional and legislative district maps approved early this year.

    [snip]

Hobbs submitted the manual as required on Oct. 1, but Brnovich refused to approve it. That left the one she completed two years before as the guidelines for the 2020 elections. A contract lawyer Brnovich hired to review the manual sent her a letter in early December where he said large parts of it did not meet legal requirements.

In a Dec. 17 response, Hobbs told Brnovich much of the rejected material had been approved just two years earlier by him and Gov. Doug Ducey.

    [snip]

Brnovich’s decision to sue Hobbs stands in contrast to his handling of the previous secretary of state, Republican Michele Reagan, who never completed an election procedures manual during her four years in office — during one election cycle, she didn’t even bother to write one.

At the time, Brnovich rejected a complaint by attorney Tom Ryan seeking the attorney general’s prosecution of Reagan.

Arizona AG wants to stop death-row prisoner’s mental fitness test

Prosecutors have asked the Arizona Supreme Court to call off a mental-fitness hearing for death-row prisoner Clarence Dixon. The examination may delay the state’s first execution since 2014.

In a filing Wednesday, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office told the court the mental competency hearing scheduled for May 3 is likely to delay his May 11 execution date.

From Jill Ryan at KJZZ, original story by Howard Fischer at Capitol Media Services (emphasis added by me) -

Arizona Attorney General Brnovich makes misleading claims on Steve Bannon's podcast

Arizona’s Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who is also in the middle of a political campaign for the U.S. Senate, has made seemingly misleading claims about the Maricopa County’s 2020 election process.

On former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s podcast, Brnovich talked about his interim report on the election and also claimed that the county used artificial intelligence systems to verify ballot signatures.

Steve Bannon?  What's next?  Burning a cross in front the AG's office?

And sacrificing the life of a mentally ill person on the altar of his political ambitions?

Does Brnovich even look at the man he sees in the mirror, much less like who he sees there?

Ducey being indecisive gets Brnovich burned

From Politico, dated 2/17/2022 (emphasis added by me) -

Ducey looms as last big question on 2022 Senate map

Arizona Statehood Day came and went on Monday. Those hoping GOP Gov. Doug Ducey might use the opportunity to announce he’s running for the Senate — as then-Rep. Jeff Flake did in 2011 — were disappointed when Ducey instead appeared at an event in Los Angeles.

The weekend before, at the Phoenix Open — a massive annual golf tournament where Ducey has announced major initiatives in previous years — the governor had also dashed the hopes of supporters. Ducey gave a brief, generic talk — disheartening some in the audience of big donors and tech executives who had heard word of a possible big reveal.

    [snip]

The GOP’s chances of flipping the seat held by Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly — a key contest in the party’s fight for the Senate majority — are viewed by many in both parties as even better with Ducey, who has been elected statewide three times, than the current cast of MAGA Republicans in the race.

    Being lumped with the crowd?

    That's gotta sting...Mark Brnovich.

He's actually won a (relatively) high profile statewide race as Attorney General (so has Justin Olson, but that was for a seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission, and I'm betting that most R primary voters can't name even one member).  Not a particularly good AG, IMO, but he's still in office.

The Rs who have filed statements of interest in running for the seat -

Brnovich, Lamon, Olson, Masters, Paveza and McGuire have formed committees with the FEC.

Sinema has something to worry about, Kelly's ahead: Arizona poll day

Pointed to the Sinema stuff by Taegan Goddard's Political Wire.

From a Data for Progress release -

Poll: Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema Set to Be Unseated by Possible Challenger Ruben Gallego in 2024 Primary Landslide

In October 2021, Data for Progress published poll findings that captured the extent of Arizona Democratic primary voters’ dissatisfaction with Senator Kyrsten Sinema: She had the highest unfavorability rating of any elected Democrat tested in the state, and she was poised to lose her 2024 primary by a wide margin.

Since then, speculation has mounted that progressive Representative Ruben Gallego, a Harvard-educated Iraq War veteran, is seriously considering a bid. Meanwhile, Sinema was censured by the Arizona Democratic Party this week for her defense of the filibuster, which came at the expense of passing popular voting rights legislation.

Data for Progress’ initial polling found Gallego to be in the best position to beat Sinema in 2024. New Data for Progress polling finds that, since October, Sinema’s favorability has dipped even further — and that Gallego’s potential to secure a primary victory has increased.

    From the full poll -

    [snip]

For Senator Kyrsten Sinema, her next hurdle is going to be her 2024 primary election, where she is going to have to convince Democratic primary voters in Arizona that she deserves to keep her job. Activists who are disappointed with her obstructionism and reluctance to support President Biden’s popular agenda are already organizing to draft other high profile Arizona politicians, like Rep. Ruben Gallego, to run against her in 2024. According to our new poll of likely Arizona Democratic primary voters conducted in October, using the same methodology we used in the recent New York City mayoral primary, we find that Sen. Sinema faces a steep uphill battle to defend her record and convince voters she should stay — as negative sentiment towards her continues to grow.

Mark Kelly Narrowly Leads in Arizona 2022 General Election Matchup

In recent years, Arizona — a traditional battleground state — has trended blue. Voters elected Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly to the Senate in upset victories in 2018 and 2020, respectively, and in 2020 the state narrowly voted for Joe Biden. But amid surges in Republican voter enthusiasm and turnout, Arizona is once again poised to become a battleground. Kelly, who won his seat in a special election, is running for his first full term, and a crowded slate of Republicans are hoping to replace him. Incumbent Republican Governor Doug Ducey is term-limited and is thus not eligible to run for re-election in 2022. While he has stated he will not be joining his party’s Senate primary as recently as January 20, 2022, speculation about a possible run has mounted anyway.

New Data for Progress polling gauges the state of the 2022 midterm elections in Arizona, analyzing favorability and approval across different candidates and elected officials as well as the issues Arizona voters support.

Yes, I do wish that Kelly was doing better (and I think he should be), but I'm torn - would he be better off facing Brnovich or Ducey?

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that Sinema better have a corporate lobbying gig already lined up.
