Cheeto: Tell a lie often enough and people will believe it

At least, the gullible people.

Well, the ones gullible enough to support him and send him money, and that's all he wants, anyway.

Of course, he didn't invent the concept.

From Psychology Today, dated 1/2022 -

Illusory Truth, Lies, and Political Propaganda: Part 1

Repeat a lie often enough and people will come to believe it.

Many of us are familiar with the quotation, “Repeat a lie often enough and people will eventually come to believe it.”

Not ironically, the adage — often attributed to the infamous Nazi Joseph Goebbels — is true and has been validated by decades of research on what psychology calls the “illusory truth effect.” First described in a 1977 study by Temple University psychologist Dr. Lynn Hasher and her colleagues, the illusory truth effect occurs when repeating a statement increases the belief that it’s true even when the statement is actually false.1

[snip] [referring to the novel 1984]

“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

Needless to say, “doublethink,” along with Orwell’s description of “newspeak,” gave rise to the modern term “doublespeak” defined by Merriam-Webster as “language used to deceive usually through concealment or misrepresentation of truth.”

Cheeto hasn't just embraced the idea.  He's living the idea.

From The Hill (emphasis added by me) -

Trump slams Biden, voices unsubstantiated election fraud claims at first rally of 2022

Former President Trump held his first rally of the midterm year in Arizona on Saturday, taking the opportunity to hit President Biden and continue to voice his unsubstantiated claims about election fraud in the 2020 presidential election

In an address from Florence, Ariz., Trump covered a plethora of issues, including the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, foreign policy and crime

He *does* whine like a baby..an absolutely vindictive baby...when one of his acolytes doesn't wholeheartedly support his lies.

From KPNX -

Trump says he will never endorse Ducey for Senate ahead of Arizona visit

Former President Donald Trump is again ridiculing Gov. Doug Ducey, more than a year after he criticized him for certifying Arizona's 2020 election results that declared Joe Biden the state's victor.

The day before his scheduled visit to Pinal County, Trump released a statement Friday announcing he'd never support Ducey's possible ambitions to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

In short, the 2020 election didn't turn out how he'd prefer, and the Arizona fraudit didn't go his way either, and Cheeto is pissed.  And showing it.

Legislative schedule - week starting 1/16/2022

A relatively quiet week at the lege as bills are still being read (introduced in each chamber) and assigned to committees.  Things will pick up as the session goes on.

Note: HHR refers to a hearing room in the House building; SHR refers to one in the Senate building.

Note2: Generally, I'll only specify bills that look to propagate propaganda.  Other bills may be more conventionally bad (think: corrupt or other misuses of public monies and/or authority.  My recommendation is that if an agenda covers an area of interest to you, read the entire agenda.

The Joint Appropriations committee (the Appropriations committees of both chambers) is meeting in HHR1 at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, 1/18 to hear about the governor's budget proposal.

There will be a joint meeting of the House Commerce and House Land, Agriculture & Rural Affairs committees in HHR1 at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, 1/18 to hear from lobbyists about Arizona wines.

On Tuesday, 1/18 at 2 p.m. in HHR4, House Ed will meet.  There are 6 total bills on the agenda, including HB2112, an anti-CRT/Pro-red meat for Faux News watchers bill.

On Tuesday, 1/18 at 2 p.m. in SHR109, Senate Appropriations will meet.

On Tuesday, 1/18 at 2 p.m. in SHR1, Senate Ed will meet. 3 bills on the agenda, but 2 seem bad - SB1011, barring local school districts from using tax monies to pay for a membership in a state or national school association, and SB1068, adding to a charter school's funding.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 9 a.m. in HHR4, House Judiciary will meet.  On the agenda: HB2043, making employers liable for damages for denying a religious exemption for a Covid vaccination where the recipient claims a significant injury from that. 5 total bills on the agenda.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 10 a.m (or upon recess or adjournment of the base committee). in HHR4, House Judiciary Committee of Reference will meet to conduct sunset reviews of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections and the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 1:30 p.m . in HHR1,  House Appropriations will meet.  4 total bills on the agenda.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 1:30 p.m . in HHR3,  House Transportation will meet.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 9 a.m. in SHR1, Senate Health and Human Services will meet

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 9:30 a.m. in SHR109, Senate Finance will meet. 4 total bills on the agenda.

On Wednesday, 1/19 at 2 p.m. in SHR1, Senate Commerce Committee of Reference will meet for sunset reviews of the Arizona Office of Tourism and the Arizona State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.

On Thursday,1/20 upon recess or adjournment of the floor session, the House Appropriations Subcommittee On Government will meet, in HHR1.

On Thursday,1/20 upon recess or adjournment of the floor session, the House Appropriations Subcommittee On Health will meet, in HHR5.

On Thursday, 1/20 at 9 a.m in. SHR1, Senate Judiciary will meet. 12 bills on the agenda; most are bad, too many to list here.

On Thursday, 1/20 at 10 a.m in. SHR109, Senate Transportation and Technology will meet.

Federal Committees update

From the website of the FEC -

Couldn't find out much on Republicans Morgan and Smith in a quick search.  Both appear to be attorneys, but I couldn't confirm that.  They are running for CDs 4 and 5, respectively.

I've already posted about Townsend's run.

State committee update

From the website of the Arizona Secretary of State -

Rivas filed with the IRS nearly 5 months ago but finally established a committee with the AZSOS for a run; this post is just housekeeping.

Townsend makes it official; she's running for Congress

As has been rumored/known for a while....

If she wins, she'll be the next Congress' version of Lauren Boebert - a GQP nut who exhibits no redeeming value as a public servant.

She's running in the new CD6, which takes in a big chunk of eastern AZ, according to the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission.

Rep. Jake Hoffman may have been democratically elected by the voters in LD12, but he's using his position to get his hate on for both voters and democracy

He's been heavily involved with efforts to overturn the 2020 election and install Cheeto against the will of the voters of the US, as AZ BlueMeanie at Blog for Arizona has documented here and here.

But that doesn't qualify him for the Legislative Loon Award.

Nope, only stuff that he does and says while the lege is in session does that.

Rest assured, though, he's accomplished a lot there,

Already he has proposed (with a rogue's gallery of co-sponsors) -

HB2236, Barring the registration of voters unless the voter specifically asks to be registered.

HB2237, Barring same-day voter registration and making it a felony to so.

HB2238, Barring the use of ballot drop boxes.

HB2239, Barring electronic vote "adjudication".

HB2240, Barring centralized voting centers.

HB2241, Requiring voters to present ID to deliver an early ballot.

HB2242, Making it a felony to not "validate" the registration information of a new voter.

HB2243, Adding to the verbiage required to be on voter registration forms (to be fair to Hoffman, this one seems like it may be the least bad of all of his proposals).

HB2491, Requiring that an as yet to be determined number of factors be used to verify each signature on an ealy ballot.

HB2492, Mandating that proof of citizenship be provided when registering to vote with a non-federal form, and making it a felony to fail to do so.

HB2493, Appropriating money from the state's general fund for an "election integrity fund".

HB2494, Requiring that the AZSOS  and county recorders document any attendance at voter registration events that they attend and work, and do so on their websites.

His fans shouldn't worry - while there's a definite pattern to his lunacy and hatred, he's something of a Renaissance Man (though he and his fans may long for serfdom and despise the renaissance).

He's also proposed

HB2235, In only counties with 500K people or more (In AZ, that's the counties of Maricopa and Pima (both of which Biden/Harris won in 2020..[start sarcasm} but I'm sure that's just a coincidence {/end sarcasm]), beginning in 2025, making county supervisors the lowest-paid county-level elected officials.

HB2495, An anti-LGBTQ+ measure, banning the use of "sexually explicit materials" in public schools.  Basically, all sex-ed classes would banned under this measure.

HB2496, Creating a list of exemptions for student activity fees at public universities.

HB2497, the latest attempt to thwart the will of the voters on income tax rates.

HB2498, Banning Covid vaccine mandates.

Yup, Rep. John Kavanagh may be the early favorite for the Legislative Loon Award, but Hoffman is a definite contender for the title.

From CNBC -

Republican National Committee threatens to pull nominees from

presidential debates

The Republican National Committee on Thursday threatened to bar future presidential nominees from debates sponsored by the nonpartisan commission that has hosted the events for decades.

In a letter sent to the Commission on Presidential Debates and obtained by NBC News, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel accused the organization of failing to enact reforms that “would restore trust in the debates process.”

[snip]

Former President Donald Trump helped to drive the party’s animosity toward the CPD, repeatedly accusing organizers of treating him unfairly during the 2020 election. He pulled out of a debate in October of that year after the commission made the event virtual after Trump announced he tested positive for the coronavirus.

Whether it's Ducey or DeSantis (or whoever), GQP governors think of gaslighting as a political strategy

Yes, Ducey is running for Senate in 2024 and DeSantis is running for president in the same year.

And both are doing so on the backs of dead people.

From the Tampa Bay Times -

Gov. Ron DeSantis State of the State address: ‘We were right and they were wrong’

Gov. Ron DeSantis had a simple message to Floridians during his address to state lawmakers on Tuesday.

“We were right,” he said, “and they were wrong.”

Celebrating a booming economy and riding high in the polls during his run for reelection, DeSantis echoed his talking points over the last year during his State of the State address to state lawmakers on Tuesday.

62000+ people, and their friends and families, may disagree with him.

From Johns Hopkins University -

DeSantis lies about Covid.  A lot.

From Columbia University -

COVID-19 Data Misrepresented by Florida Governor

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that the Florida Department of Health had commenced an inquiry into the state’s reporting of COVID-19 deaths, after Governor Ron DeSantis suggested that the official reports overstate the number of deaths. According to the report, Governor DeSantis and members of his staff repeatedly questioned the accuracy of the COVID-19 death rates, with his press secretary Fred Piccolo Jr. tweeting: "we can tell you definitively that Florida is counting deaths that were not directly caused by COVID-19.” Mr. Piccolo has also sought to downplay the COVID-19 pandemic in other ways. On one occasion, he erroneously tweeted: “we had one COVID death in Florida yesterday . . yes you read that right. One.” In fact, on the day in question, there were 47 deaths.

Ducey of AZ did much the same thing in his own State of the State address.

From KTAR -

Arizona Gov. Ducey promises busy 2022 with focus on education, border in State of State address

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey promised a busy 2022 and focused on improvements in education and border security during his eighth and final State of the State address on Monday.

Ducey, a Republican, spoke at the House of Representatives to kick off his final legislative session as governor and ahead of unveiling the 2022 budget on Friday.

“For those who think it’s going to be a quiet year on the Ninth Floor, you haven’t been paying attention,” Ducey said during his speech. “And as I stand here today, the job isn’t done. The goodbyes will come later, much later.

[snip]

Ducey spoke heavily on the state of education in Arizona, singling out the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and reiterating schools would remain open for in-person learning.

He vowed to open free summer camps in June aimed at catching up students in math, reading and American civics.

The governor also said critical race theory wouldn’t be taught in schools, six months after he signed a bill banning state or local governments from requiring training in the area.

From Ducey's press release on the matter of his speech -

From his speech -

[snip]

But still, there’s no denying what’s happening on a national level is straining families and seniors’ checkbooks. Washington’s spending spree, combined with mismanagement of COVID, has broken our supply chain and inflated the cost of everything. A staggering surge of 6.8 percent – food, clothing, gas, prescription drugs. The largest increase in the cost of daily life in nearly four decades. A White House in denial it’s even occurring. And a President hell bent on printing and borrowing money while raising taxes. This is not a strategy that will help working people.

When all else fails, blame others.

Yet Ducey should shoulder the blame himself.

From Katherine Davis-Young at the AZMirror in 2020 -

As COVID-19 Cases Soar, Arizona Scraps Its Own Business Closure Benchmarks

The pandemic has been devastating for many businesses, especially those that have been made to close their doors. And lawmakers have been in the difficult position of having to decide when to require businesses to shut down. Arizona had a set of benchmarks for making these decisions, but the state’s health department recently changed its own rules, effectively ruling out any future closures, regardless of how high virus numbers rise.

In June, COVID-19 was surging in Arizona. The state’s outbreak was among the worst in the world. Gov. Doug Ducey took action. On June 17, Ducey allowed cities and counties to issue mask mandates. On June 29, he ordered bars, gyms, movie theaters, and water parks to close. The policy actions appeared to work. Cases fell dramatically.

In August, when Arizona's outbreak appeared to be stabilizing, Ducey announced a set of rules for allowing businesses to reopen. He based his plan around the state’s virus data.

[snip]

But a COVID-19 report from the Department of Health Services released Friday included an unannounced change to the benchmarks. The document shows there's now no difference between moderate transmission business guidelines and substantial transmission rules. The change eliminates any level of virus spread that would require closures of any business other than some bars and nightclubs.

Even though Arizona is seeing higher caseloads than it was when the benchmarks were created, Christ said the state’s rules were really never meant to be used to decide when businesses should close.

From Johns Hopkins University -

Of course, lying about Covid isn't a concept that Ducey (or DeSantis) invented; Cheeto may have perfected it.  From The Atlantic in 2020 -

All the President’s Lies About the Coronavirus

An unfinished compendium of Trump’s overwhelming dishonesty during a national emergency

President Donald Trump has repeatedly lied about the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s preparation for this once-in-a-generation crisis.

Here, a collection of the biggest lies he’s told as the nation endures a public-health and economic calamity. This post will be updated as needed.

Still, as bad as DeSantis' lies were, Ducey's may be worse.  Florida has approximately 3X the population of Arizona, yet only 2.5X the Covid deaths.

DOJ forms a domestic terrorism unit; expect MAGA/GQP snowflakes to feel triggered

From CNBC -

DOJ unveils new domestic terror unit as U.S. faces ‘persistent and evolving’

threats a year after Jan. 6, officials warn

The Department of Justice on Tuesday announced it is forming a unit to combat domestic terrorism as national security officials warn of a “persistent and evolving” threat of violent extremism within the U.S.

The new unit was unveiled days after the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 invasion of the Capitol, when hundreds of former President Donald Trump’s supporters violently stormed the building and forced lawmakers to flee their chambers, temporarily halting the transfer of power to President Joe Biden.

Cheeto claims "absolute immunity"; what's old is new again

The Latin term for his claim is "ave Maria" (that's "hail Mary" to you football fans :) )

From CBSNews -

Trump claims absolute immunity in attempt to toss January 6 suits from Democrats, Capitol Police officers

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump argued Monday that he is entitled to broad immunity from civil lawsuits attempting to hold him accountable for his role in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, as they sought to convince a federal judge to toss out a trio of lawsuits filed against him in the wake of last year's violent assault.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta heard oral arguments spanning roughly five hours to consider whether to grant the request from the former president to dismiss the civil cases or allow them to move forward.

The "old" part?

From USA Today in 2016 (emphasis added by me) -

Exclusive: Trump's 3,500 lawsuits unprecedented for a presidential nominee

Donald Trump is a fighter, famous for legal skirmishes over everything from his golf courses to his tax bills to Trump University. But until now, it hasn’t been clear precisely how litigious he is and what that might portend for a Trump presidency.

An exclusive USA TODAY analysis of legal filings across the United States finds that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and his businesses have been involved in at least 3,500 legal actions in federal and state courts during the past three decades. They range from skirmishes with casino patrons to million-dollar real estate suits to personal defamation lawsuits.

[snip]

Trump’s history of legal actions provides clues about his style as a leader and manager. While he is quick to take credit for anything associated with his name, he is just as quick to distance himself from failures and to place responsibility on others. In one lawsuit — filed against him by condo owners who wanted their money back for a Fort Lauderdale condo that was never built — he testified in a sworn deposition: “Well, the word ‘developing,’ it doesn't mean that we're the developers.”

AZ GOPer: why be classy when there is a primary to win?

From The Hill -

Arizona GOP Senate candidate invokes 'Let's go, Brandon' in new campaign ad

Arizona Republican Senate candidate Jim Lamon invoked the anti-Biden phrase "Let's go, Brandon" in a campaign ad released on Monday.

The ad, which kicks off a six-figure ad campaign throughout Arizona, will air tonight during the College Football Playoff championship game.

If you don't already know what the phrase means, Google it.

The Legislature is back in session; "ugly" season has already started

I was going to refer to it as "silly" season, but that name is reserved for the time in the legislative session when all Democrats and rank-and-file Republicans go into "hurry up and wait" mode, waiting for the R leadership and the governor to hand down the state's budget.  A lot of bad bills are passed during this period of boredom.

Introduced today are

HB2059, by Rep. Walt Blackman, an attack on democracy.

HB2061, also introduced by Blackman, an attack on every school's sex ed curriculum, including a section that removes language in the state law regarding discussion of AIDS (to be fair, language about AIDS is included in other parts of the bill).  It also includes a section that would mandate that abstinence-only be taught in schools.

HB2064, also introduced by Blackman, a pro-Covid and exposure to cervical cancer in schools bill

HB2065, also introduced by Blackman, removing a section of state law barring students who can't show that they've been vaccinated from attending class

HB2071, by Rep. David Cook, putting language in state law about mail in ballots being valid if they are postmarked early enough and received not later than the fifth day after election day...but does NOT remove language saying that ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on election day.

HR2001, a resolution, also introduced by Blackman, that's full of anti-Planned Parenthood/choice propaganda masking itself as a pro-African-American measure.

HB2080, by Rep. Mark Finchem, another anti-democracy measure.

HCR2003, by Rep. Gail Griffin, declaring the the legislature loves remaining unvaccinated in the age of Covid-19.

HB2112, by Rep. Michelle Udall, barring the teaching of critical race theory

HCR2001, by Steve Kaiser, asking the voters to alter the state's constitution to ban the teaching of CRT.

HB2107, by Rep. Leo Biasiucci, repealing the section of state law that allow for the ordering of business closures during declared emergencies

HB2115, also introduced by Udall, is a broadly-written measure that would enable the use of a filter to block the downloading of material that is "harmful to minors" on personal electronic devices.

And to think, at one point, I thought that Udall was one the saner Rs in the legislature.

I was wrong about that.

And that's just the House of Representatives.  In the Senate, they've already introduced

SB1123, by Sen. Wendy Rogers. A pro-concealed weapons in universities, colleges, and community colleges measure

SB1124,  also introduced by Rogers, ending fees for concealed weapons permits for actively serving members of the military or retired veterans who were discharged under certain conditions, and for active or retired LEOs.  It would also create an expedited application process for the same.

SB1125,  also introduced by Rogers, that would legalize all non-fully automatic firearms and equipment and ammunition for the same.

SB1131, also introduced by Rogers, expanding school vouchers

SB1132, also introduced by Rogers, barring municipalities from issuing bonds to finance green projects

SB1133, also introduced by Rogers, barring municipalities and school districts from holding all mail elections.  Given that the early vote in 2020 was overwhelmingly Democratic, this one isn't much of a surprise.

SB1134, also introduced by Rogers, barring the use of photo radar.

SB1135, by Sen. Warren Petersen, removing the ability of courts to evaluate change of judge affidavits

SB1138, also introduced by Petersen, basically barring all "gender transition" procedures for those under 18, and barring the use of public funds for the same, and creating an ability for anyone to sue over this.

Expect a bumpy ride from the legislature, with LOTS of red meat for MAGA/GQP types.

We've already seen that on the first day of the session.

Sunday, January 09, 2022

Sen. Sonny Borrelli: another one who isn't likely to win the Legislative Loon Award, but he's not giving up without a fight

The ride through hell starts tomorrow, when the Arizona Legislature re-enters session, crafting and passing bills to work against the interest of all Arizonans.

Senator Sonny Borrelli, the majority whip in the Senate, can be counted on to introduce many MAGA/"stop the steal" bills designed to entrench the R majority.  He's already done so.

Among the bills that he's introduced are

SB1119, making ballots public records

SB1120, requiring that ballots be on the same kind of paper as bank notes and adding a myriad of conditions to the make up of ballots

But let's be clear - Borrelli isn't a one-trick pony.

He's also proposed

SB1060, repealing a section of state law that allows a legal action against a county sheriff or deputies to continues after the death of the sheriff.

Hang on.  The ride is going to get rough.

Arizona has enough anti-vaxxer idiots; we don't need to import more

Lesson here: When doing research, search engines such as Google are your friend.

From KPNX -

Florida-based company's anti-vaccine propaganda popping up in Phoenix suburbs

Ahwatukee resident Jennifer Salome was confused when she recently found a brochure in her neighborhood telling her people dying from COVID-19 was nothing more than "fake news."

She's known people who have contracted the virus and has seen it affect people in her community. So Salome didn't understand why this literature was suddenly appearing on her doorstep.

[snip]

Almost two years into the pandemic and the highly contagious omicron variant is now raging across the Valley. During the first week of the new year, Arizona reported more than 60,000 new cases.

Earlier this week, Salome found a brochure hanging from the handle of her front door along with a newspaper from The People's Chemist entitled "Straight Talk - What's in the Covid-19 Vaccine?"

[snip]

Why is the "People's Pharmacist" sending propaganda to Arizonans?

12 News reached out to Ellison through his website's number and email. A voice message said, "We will most likely not get back to your response. There are a lot of people to help. However, most of your answers can be found in Shane’s book.”

So far the company has not responded to an email.

I couldn't find any info on the company or its owner, Shane Ellison, in Florida corporate records.

Curiosity piqued, I did some more research.

The address listed on their website's privacy policy page leads to a mail drop.

Curiosity *really* piqued now, I did some more research.

The phone number listed on their contact page, 505-510-1117, leads to New Mexico.

A quick search of corporate records in New Mexico turned up two NM corps -

XYZPost is a business registration LLC and appears to be unrelated to Ellison, other than being used for this.  They *do* seem to have a predilection for registering "holistic" medical organizations though.

The Better Business Bureau does have a listing for The People's Chemist that offers a California address that leads to a mail drop.

Given the low BBB rating (no actual complaints were provided there) and the habitual use of mail drops, I thought it prudent to look for complaints about The People's Chemist.

Some of those are here and here.

Note: In the interest of being thorough, I checked corporate records in both CA and AZ. I didn't find anything in either place.

Note2: On many websites, Ellison claims to have a master's degree in Chemistry from NAU.  Due to a lack of information, I was unable to confirm or refute that claim.

1. Wear a damn mask.

2. Get vaccinated.

3. Don't bother with propaganda.
