The Republican caucus in the AZ legislature has been described with many words.
"Subtle" is NOT one of them.
At next Monday's committee meeting of House Public Safety & Law Enforcement (HHR1, 2 p.m.), there are two bills scheduled to be considered (both are from Sen. Kevin Payne).
SB1538 is a ploy to end photo radar use in Arizona, but it doesn't do so directly.
Instead, it proposes to limit the issuance of traffic tickets for a "moving civil traffic violation" to peace officers or prosecutors (Senate president Warren Petersen amended the measure on the Senate floor to include prosecutors. Not sure when they witness a moving violation, but he is a candidate for Arizona Attorney General, and may not want to be left out of the fun.)
SB1537 seeks to rename the "peace officer training equipment fund" in a Newspeak sort of way as the "public safety de-escalation and life safety fund".
(My criticism of SB1537 may be misplaced - many credible people have weighed in as favoring the bill while the Arizona Police Association opposes it. I'm just trust-deficient.)
