Events calendar

Just a brief post today...

First up, some movies -

Friday, July 6th (yes, that's tomorrow!) - 'War Made Easy - How Presidents & Pundits Keep Spinning Us To Death.' 6:00 p.m. in the air-conditioned comfort of the Escalante Center, 2150 E. Orange in Tempe. Admission is free.

Friday, July 20th - 'Small Town Gay Bar.' Also 6:00 p.m. in the Escalante Center.

Friday, July 27th - TBD (possibly Crossing Arizona), presented by the LD8 Democrats. Location and time to be announced.

Other stuff....

Saturday, July 14 - A Town Hall meeting with LD17 State Representatives Ed Ableser and David Schapira. 11:00 a.m. - noon, Pyle Center in Tempe. Talk to them about the just-finished session of the lege, or about ideas for the next session.

Note: The Pyle Center has AC, too. :))

July 18 - 21 - The Young Democrats of America are holding their convention in Dallas, Texas. Not normally an event that I'd post here (I'd NEVER encourage someone to go to Texas, not even for a short visit :)) ), but the Young Democrats of Arizona need help sending people to the convention. They are asking for contributions, and time is running short. Details can be found here.

Tuesday, July 24 - The next meeting of the Arizona Chapter of the National Jewish Democratic Council. Time 7:00 p.m., Temple Chai, 4645 Marilyn, Phoenix, AZ (between Greenway and Thunderbird off of Tatum). State Rep. David Schapira (D-LD17) will be the featured speaker. For more information, email to njdcphx[at]cox.net.

Tonight's LD17 Meeting

The meeting went a little long, but there was a lot of info available at the meeting.

Highlights -

Maria Weeg, Executive Director of the Arizona Democratic Party introduced herself and spoke for a while on a number of topics, including efforts to build the party.

Josh Garrett, the ADP's Faith-Based Outreach Campaign Manager talked about efforts to remind the 'religious community, which has been co-opted by the Reps for over 20 years, that Democrats are 'values voters' too, and that issues such as health care, poverty, global warming, and HIV/AIDS are moral issues at least as much as abortion and same-sex marriage.

Victor Aronow of the Arizona Community Media Foundation talked to us about his organization and its drive to obtain a non-commercial educational radio license for the Phoenix area. They need help, both financial and practical (i.e. - join the org or write letters for the FCC license application); contact them through their website (click on the link above), email at info[at]azcmf.org, or call 480.829.5746.

In the legislative update, Reps. David Shapira and Ed Ableser, and Sen. Meg Burton-Cahill talked about the approaching end of the legislative session and the ongoing budget games that the Republicans are playing.

The interesting one there is the cause of the rush to get a budget compromise passed this week, possibly during a marathon session on Thursday.

Apparently, one of the Republican votes that Speaker Jim Weiers was counting on has scheduled a vacation and will be unavailable for two weeks following this week.

You'd think that the House Majority Leader would know better than to do that after last year's session that lasted almost until July...

Who knows? Perhaps for next year's session, the Rep caucus will select a leader with more 'leader' ability.

....OK - probably not; the Republicans seem to be more interested in forming circular firing squads these days. And I'm not complaining about it. :)

Upcoming LD17 events -

Phone banking opportunities for LD17 Dems on Thursday June 7 and 21 to help register new Democratic voters. Contact district chair Doug Mings at dougmings[at]gmail.com.

On June 9, the last District Day of Action neighborhood walk of the summer will be held. Meet at Kiwanis Park in Tempe.

June 13 - Democratic Happy Hour at Gordon Biersch Brewing Company at 5th and Mill in Tempe at 6:30 p.m. Contact Debra Scheff at njdb4[at]aol.com for info.

June 22 - The LD17 Democrats present the film "The War Tapes" at the Escalante Center.

Next meeting - July 3rd, same time and place (7:00 p.m., Pyle Center in Tempe)

July 4 - Volunteers needed for the booth at the July 4th Tempe Town Lake Festival; contact Doug Mings at the above email addy if you are interested in helping out.

Other events announced at the meeting -

June 6 - The Tempe Elementary School District #3 will be holding a public forum on redistricting from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sanchez Administration Building, 3205 South Rural Road.

June 23 - A neighborhood fundraiser for Tempe City Council candidate Corey Woods. From 7 - 11 p.m. enjoy a "buffet dinner followed by a Woods/Kuby pie bake-off!" Contact Lauren Kuby at laurenkuby[at]gmail.com for info.

June 24 - The Arizona Institute for Peace Education and Research (AIPER) is screening the movie Jesus Camp at the AIPER office in Tempe (2510 S Rural) at 5:00 p.m.

One last highlight from tonight's meeting -

The campaign has already started - last week there were a couple of 'anti-Ableser, Schapira and Burton-Cahill' signs up in Scottsdale at the northeast corner of Indian School and Miller. They were apparently put up by the owner of a sign company who was upset that the LD17 legislators didn't vote to legislatively override Scottsdale's ordinance restricting signwalkers.

To the person(s) who posted the signs -

Waaaahhhhhhhhhhh!

Oh, and by the way, Indian School and Miller is in LD8, not LD17.

Good night!

Thursday night's LD8 Dems program...

On Thursday night, while the LD17 Dems were screening and discussing the movie 'The Great Warming,' [See post: "We're famous!"] the LD8 Dems were holding a program about anti-war activism in our community.

On the heels of their very successful March Community Outreach program with Scott Ritter (200+ attendees!), there was a great amount of interest from attendees to find out what they can do as individuals to end the occupation of Iraq and to prevent a preemptive war against Iran.

The LD8 Democrats had representatives from 7 groups at the forum -

Sherry Bohlen, Arizona Democratic Progressive Caucus
Dan O'Neal, Progressive Democrats of America
Rebecca Bahr, Military Families Speak Out
Sheila Ryan, Women In Black
Caryn Gardner, Code Pink Phoenix
Edwina Vogan, Arizona Alliance for Peace and Justice
Mitch Rubin, The End the War Coalition

Note: Sherry Bohlen is active in most of the groups present, not just ADPC.

One of the topics of conversation early on was the two resolutions that the ADPC will be introducing at the State Committee meeting later this month. One calls for the end of the occupation of Iraq; the other expresses opposition to a preemptive attack on Iran.

Based on the meeting tonight, there may be some dissent on the Iran motion - some audience members felt that the wording "painted Israel with the same brush as Iran."

There was also a mention of HR508, the Bring the Troops Home and Iraq Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2007, with many panelists and audience members urging people to contact their congresscritter (Congressman Harry Mitchell is AZ5) to express their support for the measure.

All of the panel members implored people to get involved with the various organizations and the events that they sponsor.

As Dan O'Neal said - "Doing nothing is not an option."

To paraphrase the D8 Dems' meeting announcement - Feet on the street stokes the heat on our country's leadership.

Get involved.

Note: Any of the websites listed above is a great place to start; all contain contact info. Another good, all-encompassing, resource mentioned during the forum is the website AntiWar.com.

Have a great weekend...

Went to the LD8 Dems meeting tonight...

and was treated to an informative presentation from Todd Landfried, the interim Executive Director of the Maricopa County Democratic Party.

He spoke about the accomplishments of the MCDP during the last cycle, the current activities of the county party, and the goals for the coming election cycles (both 2007 and 2008.)

When discussing the accomplishments of the MCDP last year one of the first things he did was to describe working with (former MCDP Chair) Judy Kennedy as an "absolute joy." [Note: she's moved on to the state party executive committee - she's been elected as the Secretary of the Arizona Democratic Party. Lucky them. :) ]

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment was creating an infrastructure to find, train, and support candidates county-wide. In the past, the approach to these activities was somewhat haphazard; not any more. In addition, the MCDP did a fantastic job of raising money, such a good job, in fact, that the party was able to carry forward the most money to the new cycle that it ever has been able to.

The current activities include fundraising (already a success - this year's budget is much more than last year's) and a lot of work with PCs - recruiting, training, and involving them. Also, the county party has been working at getting its committees filled and up to speed.

Goals for the coming two years include using the 2007 election cycle as prep for the 2008 cycle, raising the visibility of legislative district organizations and PCs, and did I mention fundraising? :)

Overall, it was a very encouraging presentation about where the county party is and where it's going. In addition, we learned that the combination of Todd Landfried as executive director and Mark Manoil as chair of the county party is an effective, creative, and dynamic one. [Mark wasn't there, but everyone there knew him.]

Upcoming events of interest to LD8 Dems (all local Dems, actually):

February 19 – Nucleus Club February Luncheon featuring Senator Mike Gravel from Alaska and Dan Saban, potential candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff. Held at the Phoenix Country Club, cost is $40 for non-members. Call 602-234-6545 for details.

February 25 – Reception Honoring Judy Kennedy, from 5:00 until 7:00pm at the Union Hills Country Club, 9860 W. Lindgren Ave. (south of Union Hills Dr. on 99th and then east on Lindgren to club). $25 per ticket, all proceeds to West Democratic Hdqts.

March 8 – Women in Blue celebrate “One Arizona,” featuring Governor JanetNapolitano. Held at the Arizona State Capitol, Executive Tower Bldg., beginning at 7:45 a.m. Lunch at the Wyndham Hotel includes guest speaker, Terry McAuliffe, past Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Luncheon cost is $30 and must be pre-paid by Feb. 27th.

March 29 – “Will the United States Invade Iran,” a topic presented by Scott Ritter. Please join us at 6:30pm at the Scottsdale Civic Center on March 29th to hear Scott Ritter (former UN weapons Inspector) discuss the topic. A flyer will be coming your way next week-end so that you can register.

April 2 - Former Vice-President Al Gore will be speaking at ASU. Details forthcoming.

Good night!

Early bill submissions for LD17, LD18, and LD8

Last night's post about the Republican attempt to cut a quarter billion dollars from public education, SB1027, inspired me to look into what other bills have been submitted already.

My focus is on LD17 (my district), LD8 (north Scottsdale), and LD18 (Mesa) because those are the closest to me. Other districts are available on the Lege's website, just click on the Representative or Senator that you are interested in.

The brief summaries of the bills are NOT meant to be definitive; I haven't read any cross-referenced sections of the law.

If the bill addresses a topic of interest to you, read the text of the bill for yourself. If the area is one of interest to you, you'll probably understand the bill better than I do, anyway. :)

The list (note: most of these are co-sponsorships, not solo submittals):

LD17 -

Sen. Meg Burton-Cahill (D): none listed yet.

Rep. Ed Ableser (D): none listed yet.

Rep. David Schapira (D): none listed yet.

LD8 -

Sen. Carolyn Allen (R): SB1032, a bill indemnifying hospitals and their employees from liability for "any civil or other damages as a result of any act or omission", under certain conditions.

Rep. Michele Reagan (R): SCR1002, an amendment to the state constitution stating that public schools and teachers are "not subject to punitive damages for any act or failure to act related to classroom discipline."

Rep. John Kavanagh (R): A group of "technical correction" bills...
HB2001 - Relating to poison control
HB2002 - Relating to the taxation of common areas owned by homeowners' and/or community associations.
HB2003 - Relating to individual income tax credits for water conservation systems.
HB2004 - Relating to common school districts.
HB2005 - Relating to schools and property taxes (this one looks like a tense correction of a single word.)
HB2006 - Relating to public health and safety.
HB2007 - Relating to general election ballot.
HB2008 - Relating to contractors.
HB2009 - Relating to insurance.
HB2010 - Relating to state parks enhancement fund.

LD18 -

Sen. Karen Johnson (R): none listed yet. I know it won't last, but Thank God.
Rep. Russell Pearce (R): SB1027 (already discussed) and SB1028, a bill to accelerate Class One property tax reduction.
Rep. Mark Anderson (R): none listed yet.

Summary:

On the surface, it looks as if the Democrats in the lege aren't doing anything to prepare for the coming session, and the Republicans (especially Kavanagh) are hitting the ground running.

Then, a check of all of the Democrats in the lege shows that none of them have bills listed yet, even though I know that most of them have already prepared some.

The fact that the Rep leadership of both chambers of the state lege isn't allowing Democrats to even submit bills seems to be an indication that the Republicans are still more interested in the basest partisanship than in governance.

Also, a check of the bills that have Rep. Kavanagh listed as a sponsor show that most of them have no real legislative substance to them. "Technical corrections" bills are a great way to pad his "bills passed/signed" numbers when he campaigns for re-election. His name on such bills is evidence that he is already a favorite of the House Republican leadership who are going out of their way to help him, even before he has taken his oath of office.

Personal note: Edit to correct on 12/29: I just realized that my note about Rep. Kavanagh was incorrect. He is NOT listed as a co-sponsor of SB1027. I apologize for the error and have deleted the note. Thanks.

End edit 12/29

Edit to add:

A Random Raspberry (just made that up, but I like it! :) ) to Sen. Jim Waring of LD7. His SB1015 would turn ER and other medical personnel into DWI enforcers. It would require health care providers to "notify a law enforcement officer or agency" if they have a patient that was involved in a traffic accident whom they "reasonably" believe was the driver of the vehicle in the accident and they have a blood test indicating that the patient has a blood alcohol count greater than 0.08.

Failure to comply would be grounds for professional discipline by the regulatory agency governing the provider's profession, up to and including loss of professional licencing.

Why the raspberry? Two reasons -

1. Health care providers are medical professionals, not law enforcement professionals. Their focus must ALWAYS be on the patient; anything else is a distraction from their ability to provide the best care possible for the patient.

2. This bill, if enacted, would serve to discourage possibly seriously-injured people from seeking necessary medical attention. That's not something our legislators should be promoting.

Period.

Anyway, as the session starts rolling, I'll try and keep an eye out for the seriously loony and/or nasty proposals.

End edit.

Later!
